Many people think of Energy Star as an appliance rating, but the program offers much more than that for homeowners. As an internationally recognized symbol, Energy Star endorses energy efficient products across the spectrum of building materials, windows, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, lighting and electronics.
To qualify, products must meet or exceed high energy efficiency levels without compromising performance, so that consumers can make eco-friendly choices that save energy.
At first, the Energy Star program promoted only computer and monitor efficiency, but it soon expanded, and now includes close to 40 different types of products or materials. Each must pass certain criteria, in terms of safety, performance, warranty, energy source, size, capacity and fuel source. Best of all, products must have competitive features, and be priced so that costs can be recovered through measurable savings over a reasonable period of time.
